Is it just me, or have you been seeing college sweatshirts everywhere lately? They say fashion repeats itself and what’s old will ultimately be new again but, call me crazy, I never thought my raggedy Barnard crewneck would become winter’s most unexpected It item. Comfortable yet polished – especially when paired with a skirt suit or striped palazzo pants – the look is synonymous with ivy-covered campuses and academia. Throw on a college sweatshirt and you’re instantly transported to a crowded lecture hall, waiting for a professor to wax philosophic about midcentury poets. It doesn’t matter how many years have passed since you were an undergrad, whether you haven’t yet applied, or if you skipped the college experience altogether; wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with an alma mater has always been and will forever be classic, and the best trends are always resurrected.
Six years ago, my family experienced a huge scare when my then 65-year-old mom was rushed to the ER in order to receive an emergency cardioversion—aka a medical paddle used to restart her heart. The day before the trip to the emergency room, we’d been traveling, and my mom (who has since discovered she has an extreme sensitivity to sugar) had a pumpkin spice latte and an almond-filled French pastry for breakfast and then later on after dinner a small vanilla ice cream cone. As she explains, it was enough sugar (at least for her) to send her heart into atrial fibrillation, or an uneven heart rhythm.
“As scary as the experience was, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise,” she tells me. “I banished heavy sugar doses from my diet and noticed that my skin started looking better. Soon after this, I forced myself to watch a … Read the rest
Through all the twist-outs, wash-and-gos and high puffs in my six years of being natural, protective styles that use synthetic or human hair extensions reign supreme as my favourite way to style my afro-textured hair and help it thrive.
From cold winter air to wet summer humidity, protective styles tuck your own hair away from the elements, encouraging growth and moisture retention. They also prevent product overload and keep your hands out of your hair which helps avoid breakage, says Zaynab Logun, a stylist in Edmonton who is known for her protective styles that incorporate extensions. Installing may be time-consuming at the get-go, but adding in hair is key to making protective styles long-lasting and low-maintenance, which will make your morning routine a breeze. “With extensions, a hairstyle can last up to six to eight weeks,” says Glenna Sandy, a Toronto-based stylist who has been styling natural hair … Read the rest
Today, Forever 21 launched its first-ever Black History Month collection, a collaboration with three Black artists – Stormy Nesbit, Ashley Sky Walker, and Henry Jones. The limited-edition capsule collection features a mix of vibrant hoodies, matching sets, and tees that capture the range, power, and beauty of Black artistic expression.
You’ll find a visual array of pieces communicating meaningful messages and celebrating influential Black figures such as Malcom X and Miles Davis. As the struggle to end systemic racism continues, this collection has a particularly emotional resonance. The striking artwork, visible on each item, was designed by the creatives who were fully immersed in the entire process. As Nesbit shared with us over email, “Forever 21 allowed me to create from my heart and present my most authentic self without any reservations, so my excitement is an understatement.”
A strong advocate for representation, Nesbit draws inspiration from … Read the rest
Burberry may be known for its iconic tartan and classic trench coat (among other things), but the British fashion house has its footprint in the beauty space, too. There’s an extensive lineup of lip products and foundations, but in particular, its perfumes are a standout.
The Burberry scents really evoke London cool-girl style. There are scents that can transport you to a rainy day in the capital city or an English garden. And honestly, with us not being able to travel a whole lot (or at all) these days, I think we’ll take any form of escapism that we can get. Fragrances can really take you there.
I’m personally a fan of Burberry fragrances because they’re everything I want in a perfume: something that’s timeless but feels fresh. Plus, I’ve loved London ever since I studied abroad there over 10 years ago, so it perfectly suits my Anglophile preferences.

It’s difficult enough being a woman in politics and having your every move – and fashion choice – being much more heavily scrutinized than your male counterparts. Then, there’s the added pressure of representing such monumental, historical change. Although Harris has done well so far, she and her team aren’t going to get it right every time. The vice president’s signature Converse sneakers have become a symbol for her relatability, signifying that such a powerful political position is accessible … Read the rest
Janet Gunn is always quite the source of sartorial inspiration. We routinely turn to her if we’re looking for fresh shopping tips or style advice. You may remember when she recently shared the loungewear looks she’s loving at the moment. Well, given the fact that she adores fashion and works as an influencer, she’s accumulated quite the smattering of clothing items over the years. As a result, she spent time recently reorganizing her closet and purging items she’s not wearing as much anymore. Naturally, we were intrigued by her closet clean-out process.
“Over the past 10 months, I’ve had the time to re-evaluate many things, including my closet layout and clothing choices and how I can be better organized,” she said. “With help from professional stylist and closet organizer, Sherry Farrahi, I discovered how freeing ‘Less is more’ can truly be! She helped me organize my closet … Read the rest
If you’re anything like us, then you probably spent a good chunk of the last year in quarantine doing at least one of two things: watching Schitt’s Creek (or rewatching…for the 3rd time, but who’s counting?) and playing video games. This past fall, not only did the beloved comedy series break an Emmys record, taking home a staggering nine trophies in one night, but it was also one of the most-streamed shows across all platforms. As for video games, whether you’ve always been an avid gamer or you played for the first time since childhood in the last few months, gaming has become a great way to connect with friends and family, and maybe even sneak a workout in here and there. Actress Annie Murphy, who played the iconic Alexis Rose on Schitt’s Creek, may fall into the “beginner-ish gamer” category, but she dove head-first into her … Read the rest
